We use an examination of conscience to help call to mind our sins and failings since our last confession. It is best to review it during a period of quiet reflection before approaching the priest in the sacrament of confession.
To make a good examination of conscience:
• Set aside some quiet time for prayer and reflection.
• Start by praying to the Holy Spirit, asking for help in making a good examination to prepare for confession.
• Read through the items on this list and honestly reflect on your behavior for each item since your last confession.
• If necessary, take this list or some brief notes (keep them private!) to confession to help you remember what you need to confess.
Please see the links to help you find the right examination of conscience appropriate to your age. The last link is 'A Guide for Confession,' is a review on how to go to confession.
